Lahore University of Management Sciences

                             History
The Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) is a national university, established by sponsors belonging to the country’s leading private and public sector corporations. The goal of the sponsors is to develop an institution, which would provide rigorous academic and intellectual training and a viable alternative to education comparable to leading universities across the world.
The National Management Foundation, the sponsoring body of the University was incorporated in November 1984 and was granted a charter by the Government of Pakistan for establishing the University, in March 1985, with the president of Pakistan being designated the role of the University’s Chancellor. Through this charter, the University was given the legal right to establish degree-granting programmes. The Board of Trustees, the policy-making body of the University, comprises leading members of the business community, academia and representatives of the government. The principal functions of the Board are to set broad policy guidelines and to review the operations of the University. The Board of Governors, being the sponsors of LUMS, raises the necessary funds for the University’s operation and maintenance. Many board members are representatives of the business community and form a crucial link between the University and the industry.
In 1986 LUMS launched its Business School with a world-class MBA programme (recently the School has been renamed as the Suleman Dawood School of Business). In 1994, LUMS started a BSc Honours Programme in Economics and Computer Science. Over Subsequent years this evolved to include more specializations. In 1996, the School of Arts and Sciences was formed to oversee the undergraduate programme at LUMS. Later on, masters programmes in Economics, Computer Science and Computer Engineering were also added, followed by the launch of doctoral programmes in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Mathematics and the Executive MBA programme. In 2002, a five year, integrated, BA-LL.B degree was also included to the list of programmes offered by the school.
As the programmes and departments expanded, it became apparent that the scope and diversity of the programmes offered by the School demanded more meaningful division and focus. Hence, in 2006, School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law has been established that oversees the Social Sciences, Economics and Law Departments, and the School of Science and Engineering, launched in 2008, oversees Mathematics, Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Electrical Engineering.

Vice Chancellor's Message

Esteemed Colleagues and Friends of LUMS,
LUMS has been enriched by the commitment and dedication of many people, especially the members of the board and the faculty, and it is now ready to assume an even greater leadership role in national and international education and research. The well-deserved reputation of LUMS as a premier educational institution provides a solid foundation for the future. Working together, we can make LUMS an outstanding example of hope, opportunity, and knowledge for all.
I am honored and delighted to have been chosen to lead LUMS, and I deeply cherish the thought of returning to contribute to higher education in the country of my birth.
In my view the three leaves of the famous LUMS insignia stand for a core of institutional excellence, high-quality education and research, and leadership beyond the boundaries of our campus:

At the center is the core of institutional excellence, which includes all the facilities, services, and policies that produce a positive climate for learning and growth. These we must strengthen. To increase effectiveness we will review and streamline the university functions. Important initial groundwork on a transparent governance structure and other important policy matters has already been done. We will finalize and implement these initiatives as soon as possible.
On one side is learning and research, studying the wisdom of the past and discovering new understandings in the disciplines. Ground-breaking research expands our own knowledge, but it also enables us to engage disciplinary communities beyond the university and across the world.
On the other side is the branch of civic and international engagement–leadership beyond the boundaries of our campus. We must be a part of economic development and growth of Lahore as well as engage in its rich civic and cultural activities. We must always remain open and willing to collaborate with those who are committed to excellence in education, to other research groups nationally and regionally, and to institutions committed to solving crucial economic, social, and environmental problems.
Implicit in our vision of a flourishing institution is the promise that here at LUMS every individual can reach his or her full potential and make a valued contribution to the university and to society. LUMS needs all of us, every
scholar, teacher, staff member, groundskeeper, and each student–among many others–to work toward our goals, to suggest better ways of achieving them, and to help build a unique learning community.
I foresee a marvelous future for LUMS that we can achieve together, and I urge all alumni, faculty, students, board members, and friends of LUMS to join me in this exciting endeavor. Your careers and this campus will flourish as together, we turn this fertile ground into a university of high values and vital knowledge so critically needed for the well being of our society.
